Agricolan Päivä – Celebrating the Father of Finnish Language
Every year on April 9th, Finland celebrates Agricolan päivä, also known as Finnish Language Day (Suomen kielen päivä). This day honors Mikael Agricola, the reformer, bishop, and linguist who is widely regarded as the father of the written Finnish language.
Who Was Mikael Agricola?
Mikael Agricola (1510–1557) was a Finnish clergyman and scholar who played a pivotal role in shaping the Finnish language. He translated religious texts into Finnish during the Protestant Reformation and created the first Finnish-language book "ABC-kiria" in 1543. This was a major turning point in Finnish history, as it gave people access to education and religion in their native tongue.
