How to Apply for Higher Studies in Finland: A Step-by-Step Guide

 


Finland is renowned for its excellent education system, innovative teaching methods, and student-friendly environment. If you are planning to pursue higher studies in Finland, follow this simple step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth application process.

Starting Jan 2025, an application fee will be  collected for applicants from countries outside EU/EEA seeking education leading to a degree in higher education, excluding licenciate or doctoral degrees. 

You can apply on your own for higher studies in FINLAND. You can save the money for your living expenses , if you apply on your own as Educational consultancies charges higher service fee.

Step 1: Choose Your Course and City

Before applying, decide on the subject you want to study and the city where you'd like to live. Consider the following:

  • Studyinfo.fi:  is the official online platform where your educational journey starts. Browse the website and get familiar to courses that you are applying.
  • Big Cities: Helsinki, Vantaa, and Espoo are part of the metropolitan area with many universities and amenities and have higher chances of employment after graduation or during the studies. Riihimäki is approx 55 min ride in a train from Helsinki. Also LAHTI (55min-1,10hr) train ride from Helsinki. 
  • Other Popular Cities: Tampere, Turku, Vaasa, Kuopio and Jyväskylä 
  • North Cities: Oulu, Kajaani, Kemi, Rovaniemi lies in the North.
  • Pro Tip: Be specific about your chosen course and ensure the city aligns with your career goals and lifestyle preferences.

Step 2: Gather Educational Documents

To meet application requirements, you’ll need:

  1. Educational Transcripts: Include high school diplomas or bachelor's degrees (for master's applications).
  2. Language Proficiency:
    • Most programs require an English test, such as IELTS, Duolingo, or TOEFL.
    • For Finnish-taught programs or Nursing Studies, Finnish language skills might be required.
  3. Other Requirements:
    • Recommendation letters, motivation letter, or portfolios (if applicable). Prepare yourself and pen a motivational letter for your selection of studies.
    • Passport or other ID documents.
  4. Tip: Always check the specific requirements of your selected university on its official website or Studyinfo.fi.

Step 3: Apply via the Joint Application System

The Finnish higher education system uses a Joint Application System, which simplifies the process. All application are done via studyinfo web portal.

  • Timeline:
    • Autumn 2025 Intake: Joint application opens on 8th January,  2025.
    • Deadlines on 22 January, so be sure to apply beforehand.
  • How to Apply:
    • Visit Studyinfo.fi.
    • Prepare all necessary documents as PDF files.
    • Follow the online instructions to apply to multiple universities in a single application.

If you miss the joint application, you can still apply via Direct Application after it ends. Visit the specific university’s website for more details.

Step 4: Take the  Entrance Exams

After submitting your application, the next step is the entrance exam:

  • Entrance Exam Notification: For the January Joint Application, entrance exams are typically held in April.
  • Details: Check your email regularly for exam details and instructions. You will get learning materials in your email. 
  • Exam Day: Be prepared and ensure you meet the criteria to pass. The entrance results are typically  published in around MAY, and all successful candidates will get an admission offer.

If you pass the exam and are selected, you’ll receive an admission offer.. THE VISA PROCESS STARTS ONLY AFTER THE ADMISSION OFFER.


Step 5: Entrance Results/ Accept the admission offer

You will receive a notification about the entrance in your email with admission results and instructions.

  • If selected accept the admission offer, register as a student, and note key dates.
  • You can accept only one offer per academic term.
  • Follow the provided guidelines to accept the offer and register at the university or UAS.

Step 5: Student Visa Application

You can start the visa process only after receiving an admission offer from a Finnish university or university of applied sciences (UAS).

  • Key Requirements:
    • Admission letter.
    • Proof of financial support (to cover tuition fees and living expenses).
    • Health insurance.
    • Apply online through the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) and book an appointment at your nearest Finnish Embassy.
