No Job Offer Yet? Follow These Steps to Get Hired Faster in Finland

A practical route for cleaning, housekeeping, kitchen-helper, warehouse and other service-work applications — even when you are starting with limited Finnish.

💼 Do the next small action today. A clear application sent today is stronger than a perfect application never sent.

Not having an offer yet does not mean you should wait. In Finland, many employers use online applications, staffing companies and open applications. Your goal is to make it easy for a recruiter to understand three things quickly: what work you can do, when you can start, and how to contact you.

Start here: your 6-step hiring route

  1. Choose one target role first

Start with one clear title such as cleaner / siivooja, housekeeper, kitchen helper or warehouse worker. Use that title in your CV heading and job searches.

  2. Make one short CV for that role

Keep relevant experience, availability, languages and practical skills easy to scan. Adapt it for each vacancy instead of sending the same CV everywhere. [1]

  3. Write a new, short application every time

Reply to the job advertisement: name the role, match two or three requested skills and state when you can start. A focused letter is usually more useful than a long life story. [1] [2]

  4. Apply in three places every day

Use Job Market Finland, staffing companies, employer career pages and open applications. Save the job link, deadline and contact person in a simple list.

  5. Follow up politely

If the advertisement gives a phone number or email, you can ask one useful question before the deadline or confirm receipt afterwards. Do not call only to ask, “Did you get my CV?”

  6. Prepare for the call before it comes

Keep your phone on, answer professionally and practise a 30-second introduction in English and simple Finnish.

Good first targets for service work

🧹

Cleaning & housekeeping

Think offices, hotels, stairwells, facilities and homes. Show reliability, hygiene, time management and willingness to work mornings, evenings or weekends when true.

🍽️

Kitchen & restaurant support

Look for kitchen helper, dishwasher and food-service assistant roles. Read the ad carefully: food-handling duties may require a Hygiene Passport.Get yours hygiene certificate at €55 only.

📦

Warehouse & logistics

Search packing, sorting and terminal work. State your shift availability and any relevant safety training. Some tasks or worksites may require a Safety Card.

Your 30-minute job-search sprint

Do this once today, then repeat tomorrow with a new vacancy.

  • Update your Finnish phone number and email address.
  • Choose one job advertisement that fits your availability.
  • Save the job title and three words from the ad.
  • Edit your CV headline to match that exact role.
  • Write a 5–7 sentence application.
  • Send the application before starting the next task.

Quick questions job seekers ask

I do not speak much Finnish. Should I still apply?

Yes, if the advertisement does not require a higher level of Finnish. Apply honestly, list your real languages and level, and show that you are learning. Do not promise fluent Finnish if it is not true. For cleaning, logistics and some support roles, the language requirement can vary by workplace and customer setting.

Should I send an open application if there is no vacancy?

Yes. An open application can be useful when you name the tasks you want, your availability and the area where you can work. Add your CV and ask whether the employer can keep your details for future needs. InfoFinland calls these possible “hidden jobs.” [1]

How long should my CV and letter be?

A practical target is a CV of one or two pages and a concise, targeted application letter. Use the language of the job advertisement when you can do so accurately; otherwise, a clear English application is better than incorrect Finnish. [1] [2]

Do I need a Hygiene Passport for cleaning work?

Not automatically. Read the actual job advertisement. A Hygiene Passport is connected to food-handling requirements, so it may matter for kitchen or food-service duties, not every cleaning role. Ask the employer if the advertisement is unclear.

Can I work while I am waiting for a permit decision?

Rules depend on your individual permit and situation. Check the information on your permit card and use the official Migri guidance if you are uncertain. Do not rely on social-media advice for a work-right decision. [3]

I am unemployed. What should I do as well as applying?

If you are becoming unemployed or have been laid off, Job Market Finland says to register as a job seeker no later than your first day of unemployment if you are seeking unemployment security. Your eligibility depends on your circumstances, so use the official service for your own case. [2]

I sent applications but no one answered. What next?

Keep a simple application list. After a few applications, compare your CV and letter to the job advertisements: are you naming the role, availability and relevant skills? Improve one sentence each time, apply again and ask a trusted person to check the language.

Make your next application easier to say yes to

Choose one vacancy. Change the job title in your CV. Write five clear sentences about why you fit. Then send it. Small, consistent applications build real chances.
