๐ŸŽ Finland's Famous Baby Box โ€” Free!

Every baby born in Finland is entitled to a free baby box (รคitiyspakkaus) from Kela โ€” filled with clothes, bedding, and baby essentials. Apply at kela.fi before week 32 of pregnancy.

Neuvola โ€” Free Maternity & Child Health Clinic

Neuvola is Finland's unique free health clinic system for pregnant women and children under school age. All visits are free. Your neuvola nurse becomes your family's primary healthcare contact during pregnancy and your child's early years.

  • Regular check-ups throughout pregnancy
  • Childbirth preparation classes
  • Baby health check-ups from birth to school age
  • Vaccinations (free, following the national vaccination programme)
  • Support for new parents โ€” breastfeeding, sleep, mental health

Register at your local neuvola as soon as you know you are pregnant. Find your nearest neuvola through your city's website.

Child Benefit (Lapsilisรค)

Kela pays a monthly child benefit (lapsilisรค) for every child under 17 living in Finland. The amount increases with each additional child. You do not need to apply separately โ€” it starts automatically when your child is registered in Finland.

  • 1st child: approx. โ‚ฌ105/month
  • 2nd child: approx. โ‚ฌ116/month
  • 3rd child: approx. โ‚ฌ148/month
  • 4th child and beyond: approx. โ‚ฌ169/month each

Parental Leave

Finland has one of the most generous parental leave systems in the world. From 2023, both parents get an equal share of parental leave โ€” approximately 160 days each. Kela pays parental allowance (vanhempainraha) during leave, based on your income.

Daycare (Pรคivรคkoti)

All children in Finland have the right to municipal daycare from the age of 9 months. The cost is income-based โ€” low-income families pay very little or nothing. Apply for a daycare place through your city's online service as early as possible, as waiting lists can be long.

Free Education

Education in Finland is completely free from preschool (age 6) through university. School meals are free for all students. All school materials and textbooks are provided free of charge.

Free Summer Lunch for Kids (Leikkipuistoruoka)

During summer (Juneโ€“August), many Finnish cities offer free lunches for children under 16 at local playgrounds (leikkipuisto). Check your city's website for locations and times โ€” it's a great way to meet other families too.
